Avalanche Awareness Weekends Our 2 day avalanche awareness courses are geared to be an introduction to or refresher of the fundamentals of avalanche safety. We focus on practical knowlege and spend 2 days skiing off piste whilst learning to recognize hazards and how to avoid them. However, before heading off piste we discuss some theory of how & why avalanches happen to pin our experience on. What to expect These courses are led by one of our IFMGA Guides and after a theory session, you will have 2 full days on the mountain skiing off piste and learning about all aspects of avalanche awareness. You can expect to be skiing all day from first lift Chamonix has truely world class off piste skiing. We will be skiing all around Chamonix using the best conditions available, this will include skiing on the glaciers of les Grands Montets (conditions allowing). Chalet Accommodation in Chamonix, we stay in one of our comfortable Adventure Base Chalets, literally 6 minutes walk from the town centre's restaurants and bars. Breakfast and packed lunch are included leaving the evenings free for you to explore the delights of Chamonix. Sample Itinerary Friday: meet at the chalet at 6pm for an hours discussion about avalanches and how to avoid them - a theory session to prepare us for the next 2 days on the hill. Saturday & Sunday: on the mountain. Looking at all aspects of avalanche awareness - route finding, group control, snow pits, transceiver training, decision making, using weather and avalanche forecasts, choosing where to ski and when, hazard recognition and evaluation. You will come away from this weekend more knowledgable about avalanches and how to avoid them when skiing off piste!
Kit List skis and poles Boots - these must fit and be comfortable. We feel it is best not to rent boots. Rather buy some and have them fitted professionally - this will make your week much more comfortable, fun and blister free! 'Fit' is more important than whether a boot is 'stiff enough' or not. Rucksack - 30l. with ski straps Waterbottle - not platypus type - they freeze and leak. Transciever, probe, shovel, harness, 1 screw gate karabiner sunglasses, goggles (2 pairs useful after a wipeout!), sunscreen, lip salve/block Normal skiwear, including spare gloves.
